Background of the Study
Conflict reporting refers to the journalistic practice of covering and disseminating information about violent or tense situations, including wars, political unrest, and civil disturbances. In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, conflict reporting has become particularly significant due to the ongoing insurgency and security challenges posed by the Boko Haram terrorist group. Journalists in this region face a unique set of ethical dilemmas, as they must balance the need to report crucial information with the responsibility to avoid sensationalism, protect the safety of vulnerable individuals, and prevent the incitement of further violence. Ethical issues such as the verification of information, the portrayal of violence, the use of graphic imagery, and the protection of sources are crucial in conflict reporting. This study examines the ethical challenges faced by journalists in Maiduguri when reporting on conflicts, focusing on the strategies they use to maintain ethical standards in an environment marked by security risks, government censorship, and intense political scrutiny (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2023; Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Conflict reporting in Maiduguri, especially with the ongoing insurgency, presents numerous ethical challenges for journalists. Journalists often face difficulties in verifying the information they receive due to the fluid and dangerous nature of conflict zones. Furthermore, there are concerns about the sensationalization of violence, which can exacerbate public fear and worsen the conflict. In addition, reporting on sensitive topics such as civilian casualties, military operations, and insurgent activities requires careful ethical consideration to ensure that the privacy and dignity of affected individuals are upheld. This study seeks to investigate these ethical dilemmas and propose ways in which conflict reporting in Maiduguri can be ethically conducted while maintaining journalistic integrity (Okoro & Suleiman, 2024; Musa & Ibrahim, 2023).
